It’s Tuesday and Time For Some Teasers

Teaser Tuesday is sponsored by MizB at Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Grab a book you are reading, open to a random page and pull two sentences. Post the book title, author, and page number. No spoilers, please.

The great thing about our group of Quirky Girls is that we love to read a wide variety of books. Here’s a little taste of what we are reading right now:

From Molly:

“Despite this bias toward the kitchen, however, Mrs. Beeton didn’t actually like cooking and didn’t go near her own kitchen if she could possibly help it. You don’t have to read far into the recipes to begin to suspect as much – when she suggests, for instance, boiling pasta for an hour and three quarters.”

Page 77 of Bill Bryson’s “At Home – A Short History Of Private Life,” providing in this teaser a bit of commentary on author Isabella Beeton who wrote “The Book of Household Management” which dealt mainly with the kitchen and cooking (who quite frankly sounds like a girl after my own heart)

From Jehara:

“We talked about what it was like to go get milk, and have to walk past two men with machine guns. We talked about the smoke from the pit, about breathing in bits of bone, and loss, and terror, every hour of the day.”

Stories I’ve Only Told My Mom edited by Sarah Bryden-Brown (Kindle version location 844)

From Izzybella:

“You know how it is with cats: They don’t really have owners, they have staff.”

Chosen by P.C. Cast

From Margot:

I had never given my parents’ marriage much thought, perhaps because I never wanted one of my own. I had seen them disagree but rarely really argue, so I took for granted that they were happy and took it for granted themselves. “We haven’t been married, so we can’t exactly judge, can we?”

Three Junes by Julia Glass

That’s what the Quirky Girls are reading. What about you? Can you share a teaser from what you’re reading?

About Margot

I'm also known as Joyfully Retired. I love to talk. I love to talk about books I've read, movies I've seen, places I've traveled to, people (especially my children and grandchildren), and Food. On the Quirky Girls Read blog I'm trying to read all the books that have won the major awards and then, of course, talk about them.

  4. Great teasers! I loved Three Junes…in fact, I love Julia Glass. The teaser from At Home made me giggle. And Stories I’ve Only Told My Mom sounds intriguing, as does Chosen. I agree about cats having staff! LOL

    Here’s MY TT POST

  5. Wow! Some great teasers. I particularly love the one about Mrs Beeton. I don’t know this book of Bill Bryson’s but might have to add it to my collection. And how true is the teaser about the cats! Is Izzybella a cat person?

    Here’s mine:

Ironically Izzybella is more of a dog person. 🙂 I have two dogs, but I grew up with Siamese cat I loved madly who was named Lester. I will confess that I have never been able to love any other cat quite so much. He was a genuine character and I was his person from age 0 to age 13. I was devastated losing him and though I like cats a great deal, I tend more toward dogs now.

Lester is still my favorite cat ever and Baxter was the best dog ever! I’m convinced they’re hanging out in heaven and Baxter is all “HEY YOU’RE AWESOME LET’S GO PLAY OOH A BUTTERFLY” and Lester is all “bored now.”

    • Bumbles says:

This is Bryson’s newest book – I obtained a copy at last Fall’s Boston Book Festival when I saw him speak and do a reading. He is very entertaining – I always find a bit of myself in his subjects ;0)

  6. Carole says:

    Oh very nice teasers!
I must have the Bill Bryson. I love his books and that one sounds just as good as the rest.
Stories I’ve only told my mom sounds very interesting. Must investigate that further.
I’ve read Chosen and enjoyed that. I like a bit of YA now and then.
    Here’s my teaser:

    • Bumbles says:

The beginning of Bryson’s book is a bit dry – textbook almost – but he sprinkles in enough dry humor to go along with it so I keep on reading. I don’t think anything will ever top A Walk In The Woods though!

  7. kaye says:

Molly–*snort* that’s funny. I’m not much into cooking either 🙂
Margot–sounds like a perfect marriage but I’m guessing its not–thanks for stopping by today.

    • Bumbles says:

I know that is too long to boil pasta, but honestly, I have no idea how long it should be done. That’s Andy’s area. I just sit and watch while I wait to find out what I get to eat that night :0)

  8. Amy says:

Molly, that’s a great teaser for At Home. I think this was areally interesting book. Not my favorite Bryson but still a good one. I hope you’re enjoying it!

A fascinating, scary teaser, Jehara. It definitely made me interested in this book. I hope you review it!

Fantastic teaser, Izzybella! As the servant to many a feling master, I cannot express enough how very truthful is this teaser. lolol

Margot, I adored the Three Junes. I hope you’re enjoying it. I like the teaser you chose, it’s a profound comment which I think many people could say about their owm parents marriage…& quite possibly, their children could say the same about those same parents!

  9. Amy says:

I comment here but I don’t see my comment ~ “Harumph!” I’ll try again!

At Home is a good Bryson book & I like the teaser you posted, Molly. I like some of Bryson’s other books better, but I thought this one was interesting. I hope you’re enjoying it!

Three Junes is a wonderful book! That’s a terrific teaser, Margot. I think so many people have similar thoughts of their own parents marriage.

Izzybella, I’m cracking up over your teaser! It’s great! And, as one who serves many a feline master, I cannot express how very truthful is that teaser! lolol

Wow, that’s quite a frightening & troubling teaser, Jehara. It makes me very interested in the book & I hope you review it when you’re finished reading.

  10. LOL love the cat teaser! They are all good to but that one made me laugh.

  11. Great teasers this week, they all look awesome. I LOL’d at the cat teaser, that is the exact attitude of our cat. Thanks for stopping by:)

  12. Very funny teaser from Chosen.

  13. Your teasers are awesome! I love the recipe teaser…boiling pasta for an hour and three-quarters? Too funny!

Following from the hop. Check out my teaser:

  14. Wonderful teasers! Especially that one about Mrs. Beeton – I’ve always been fascinated by her. And Three Junes is one book I’ve been intending to read for years now. Hope to get to it this summer.

  15. Quite a variety here. I don’t cook either so wouldn’t care about that first book. Glad I can shop for food without going past guys with machine guns! I think CHOSEN appeals to me the most.
