Teaser Tuesday #14

Teaser Tuesday is sponsored by MizB at Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Grab a book you are reading, open to a random page and pull two sentences. Post the book title, author, and page number. No spoilers, please.

The great thing about our group of Quirky Girls is that we love to read a wide variety of books. Here’s a little taste of what we are reading right now:

Our new mom, Molly, is reading. Yes, she is. She’s reading Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown illustrated by Clement Hurd (1947)  She said, “I might not be reading much for myself these days but at least my baby boy can be introduced to a classic kid lit”

“Goodnight stars

“Goodnight air

“Goodnight noises everywhere.”

Jehara is reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

“The strange story of the flowers had never been reported in the press; only a very few people knew of it. Thirty years ago the regular arrival of the flower was the object of much scrutiny-at the National Forensic Laboratory, among fingerprint experts, graphologists, criminal investigators, and one or two relatives and friends of the recipient. Now the actors in the drama were but three: the elderly birthday boy, the retired police detective, and the person who had posted the flower.”

Margot is reading Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann

“It was a torture shop for him, worrying about the world, having to deal with intricacies when what he really wanted was to be ordinary and do the simple things. Yet nothing was simple, certainly not simplification. Poverty, chastity, obedience –he had spent his life in fealty to them, but was unarmed when they turned against him.”

ChaucerianGirl is reading Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account

“Countless thousands had since climbed down from the box cars and crossed the thresholds of the crematoriums. The present Sonderkommando was the twelfth to bear the name. I learned the history of each preceding Sonderkommando, when it “reigned” and who its heroes were, and I was reminded of a fact I already knew: that the Sonderkommando’s life span was only a few months at the most.” (Auschwitz: A doctor’s eyewitness account, by Miklos Nyiszli, Richard Seaver, Tibere Kremer, copyright 1960, 2011 by Miklos Nyiszli, translation copyright 1993, 2011 by Richard Seaver, p. 48, nook edition)

IzzyBella is reading  Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison

I lost my second sight completely then, as the witch manning the guest book pointed me out to a second man, clearly security by his serious lack of any emotional expression. “Oh crap,” I swore, turning my back on the room and picking up my Dead Man’s Float. “What?” Kisten said irately while he stacked his winnings according to color. I winced, meeting his eyes over the rim of my glass. “I think I made a boo-boo.”

And those are the books we’re spending our time with. What about you? What are you reading?

About Margot

I'm also known as Joyfully Retired. I love to talk. I love to talk about books I've read, movies I've seen, places I've traveled to, people (especially my children and grandchildren), and Food. On the Quirky Girls Read blog I'm trying to read all the books that have won the major awards and then, of course, talk about them.

Sherre, I have been on the fence about this book for ages. However, I finally started it because one of my best friends and I have a thing where we take turns picking books for us to read together. This was her pick and I had been dragging my feet on it. I finally started it while on a transatlantic flight. I have to say that it sucked me in and a few chapters in I was hooked. Definitely going to keep reading. So I suppose there is something to the hype after all. 😉
